BRAND'S® Essence of Chicken can enhance iron absorption and utilisation in humans.
Some volunteer blood donors at Guy's Hospital in the UK were studied. They were divided into three groups with the same haemoglobin levels. Each group received iron tablets of differing concentrations. One group received BRAND'S® Essence of Chicken powder, which contains undetectable iron. Haemoglobin, serum iron, and ferritin were measured before and after blood donation (for a 3 week period).
BRAND'S® Essence of Chicken did have a positive effect on serum iron. There were significant percentage falls of serum iron especially in the females of the placebo group where iron was 31% lower than pre-donation value. The percentage fall was maximal after one week. The beneficial effects BRAND'S® Essence of Chicken on serum iron are explained beyond the basis of supplementing iron. It is possible that BRAND'S® Essence of Chicken improves iron status by improving its absorption and its mobilisation from iron stores in the body.
A blood donation is like a minimal blood loss. It occurs during menstruation, post-delivery, during minor injuries and after medical surgery. Iron loss from the body can be corrected by taking a high dosage of an iron supplement. This study showed the effects of BRAND'S® Essence of Chicken on iron status. These positive results were supported by human experiments. In blood donors, BRAND'S® Essence of Chicken enhances the return to normal of serum iron after blood donation, without iron supplementation. These findings also support the beneficial impact of BRAND'S® Essence of Chicken on iron status in women of child-bearing age, where the iron status is known to be tenuous. BRAND'S® Essence of Chicken has a functional role in improving iron status in regular blood donors and others who need to restore their blood and recover their health.
