BRAND'S® legacy goes a long way back to the 1820s when King George IV's flagging health inspired royal chef Henderson William Brand to develop an essence of chicken tonic to boost the king's health.
Mr Brand's recipe no doubt worked because after his retirement in 1835, the now ubiquitous BRAND'S® Essence of Chicken (BEC) was commercially launched as food for children and invalids.
Upon his retirement, Mr Brand first set up shop in Mayfair to commercialize BEC.
The popularity of BRAND'S® grew in tandem with its reach in the global market, and as the British colonized countries in the region, the brand followed.
The first shipment of BRAND'S® Essence of Chicken arrived in the port of Asia in the 1920s. Few know the Singapore was the first port of call for BRAND'S® entry into Asia then.
BRANDS'® popularity caught on fast because the chicken essence concept was likened to our local double-boiled chicken soup - which has been widely used in Asia for centuries as a health tonic. However, BRAND'S® Essence of Chicken is healthier because it was completely fat-free, unlike grandmother's chicken soup.
Consumers also saw the similarities between BRAND'S® products and traditional Asian tonic. After all, both are made from 100% natural ingredients to help maintain health.
Things have changed a lot since those early days. But it's good to know that at least one thing has stayed the same - that BRAND'S® is a trusted and well-loved brand today as it was - over 170 years ago.
For generations - History of good health
A bit about the traditional double-boiling method
For over 3,000 years, the double-boiling method has been used by the chinese to make health tonics. This traditional method of preparing soup ensures that the nutrients are not destroyed by overcooking.
How's it done? The chicken is placed in a small pot. Then the pot is sealed and placed into a larger pot with boiling water. The indirect heat keeps the contents hot but just under the boiling point. This temperature and pressure control result in a thick, rich and healthy concentrate of chicken extract.
The only problem? It takes 4 to 8 hours to prepare! And there is a high percentage of fat, even after skimming.
